NEW LIFE: fit for a circular future

Sustainable flooring systems for fitness, sports and leisure facilities

Sustainable flooring systems for fitness, sports and leisure facilities

The NEW LIFE initiative is focused on supporting a sustainable circular economy. Climate-friendly recovery processes are turning used tyres into high-quality, long-lasting recycled products for the sports and fitness industry – from innovative flooring systems, edging and perimeter boards to soundproofing solutions. What’s more, sports and fitness products made from granulated tyre rubber are durable, low-maintenance and easy to install and clean. In the run-up to FSB 2025, the NEW LIFE initiative has conducting a survey in collaboration with Koelnmesse to find out how sustainable fitness studios and sports and leisure facilities are.

The global trend towards greater sustainability is also having an impact on the sports and fitness industry. More and more gyms and sports facilities are adopting sustainable practices and environmentally friendly policies. Using energy and natural resources more efficiently, reducing waste and choosing sustainable recycled products pays off – both environmentally and economically. Implementing measures like these can help operators to optimise their environmental footprint, play an active role in fighting climate change, lower their running costs and make their facilities more attractive to eco-conscious customers/members.

NEW LIFE at FSB 2025

The NEW LIFE exhibition space at FSB 2025 in Hall 10.2, D084, had plenty in store for visitors, including a NEW LIFE circular economy trail. Trade visitors were able to test various floor coverings made from recycled materials for themselves on a 17 metre long course and see the quality and versatility for themselves.

At the stand, the advantages, opportunities and possibilities offered by recycling used tyres into high-quality products for the sports and fitness industry were presented by NEW LIFE partners.

There was a focus on the environmental and economic advantages, opportunities and possibilities of the circular economy in general and of high-quality fitness products made from granulated tyre rubber in particular. The various stages, as well as the opportunities and possibilities of recycling used tyres into high-quality sports and fitness products, were presented via video clips and relevant exhibits along a circular trail. The stand floor was laid with rubber mats and rubber tiles made from granulated tyre rubber so that visitors could experience the advantages of this sustainable flooring for themselves.

NEW LIFE Competition: The Recycling Fairy needs a name!

Fairy with red hair and a green dress sitting on a stack of old tyres.

As part of its commitment to sustainable urban development, the NEW LIFE initiative has released a new animated film. In it, a magical recycling fairy transforms grey cityscapes into green, liveable environments – creating playgrounds, gardens and eco-friendly infrastructure using recycled tyres.

To accompany the film, NEW LIFE launched a creative competition: They’re looking for a name for the recycling fairy!

Everyone is invited to submit their idea by 31 October 2025 by leaving a comment under the official YouTube video. The winning name will become part of the NEW LIFE story – and will also be rewarded.

A panel of experts will soon decide on the best name.

The Prize:

A colourful EUROFLEX® turtle made from recycled rubber granulate – a symbol of sustainable playground design and long-lasting material cycles.

With this campaign, NEW LIFE aims to raise awareness for recycling solutions in urban spaces, while engaging both young and older audiences in the vision of greener cities.

NEW LIFE survey: Sports and fitness industry rethinks - Sustainability becomes a training goal

How green is training in Germany? How sustainable is the sports and fitness industry? To find out, the NEW LIFE initiative, together with Koelnmesse, surveyed operators of fitness studios and sports facilities across Germany in March and April 2025. For more than 80 per cent of respondents, sustainability, climate and environmental protection are ‘important’ or ‘very important’. A good half of gym and sports facility operators have already used sustainable products made from recycled materials - primarily sports and fitness flooring (41%), but also impact sound insulation and fall protection surfaces. The industry is therefore on the right track - but there is still room for improvement.

The initial results were published by the NEW LIVE initiative in a press release (.pdf) (only in German language).

All results of the survey were summarised in a white paper and presented at FSB 2025 in October.

NEW LIFE Circular Economy Education Day on 28 October 2025

The NEW LIFE Circular Economy Education Day took place on 28 October 2025 at Koelnmesse’s Congress Centre East. Vocational colleges teaching gardening, landscaping, sports ground construction, and roofing as well as prospective administrative staff were invited to attend this event and visit the trade fair.

The Circular Economy Education Day, held in the Europasaal in Congress Centre East, opened at 10:00 a.m. on the first day of the trade fair. One of the key events in the programme was the presentation of the results of the NEW LIFE survey on the sustainability of Germany’s sports and fitness industry. Another of the day’s highlights was a talk by Professor Dr Thomas Müller-Kirschbaum entitled “How can companies in the sports and fitness industry be made carbon neutral without undermining their economic viability?”.

Vocational colleges and companies with trainees were able to register to take part in the Circular Economy Education Day and receive free tickets for their classes to visit the trade fair.

NEW LIFE in the classroom: free educational portal for vocational colleges

NEW LIFE the learning portal for garden and landscape building

The innovative online NEW LIFE teachers’ portal (only in German language) was also demonstrated at the exhibition stand. Eight units featuring a wide range of teaching materials has been designed to help vocational colleges and businesses with trainees communicate the importance of the circular economy, action on climate change, recycling and sustainability to their students in a way that is both engaging and suitable for the classroom. The materials could also be used to teach trainees all about the advantages and possible uses of high-quality recycled products made from granulated tyre rubber.
