Solutions for sustainable and climate-friendly urban spaces

From 28 to 31 October 2025, Cologne was once again transformed into the centre for pioneering ideas and the sustainable design of outdoor spaces. FSB brought together planners, architects, landscape architects and municipal decision-makers to shape the future of our cities together.

That year, the focus was on one of the most pressing topics: climate-regulating concepts and sustainable solutions for urban movement spaces. Visitors were inspired, discovered the latest technologies and experienced first-hand what innovative approaches to climate adaptation in the city centre looked like at the special show ‘Stadtoase’.

The urban oasis - sustainability meets innovation

Sponge city: Intelligent solutions for water management

Ready for the city of the future? One focus of the urban oasis is the concept of the sponge city, with which cities are responding to the challenges of climate change. State-of-the-art solutions such as green roofs, retention systems and permeable paving help to store water efficiently and provide cooling effects in urban areas. Even sports fields are being transformed into multifunctional areas - for more greenery and fewer heat islands. Find out how these strategies can inspire your projects.

Water play equipment as the highlight of the city oasis

Water meets creativity - the Stadtoase showed how interactive water play equipment offers much more than just fun. Immerse yourself in a world of innovative technologies: from mist systems and interactive fountains to multifunctional water surfaces. These highlights create recreational areas in the centre of the city and actively contribute to improving the climate.

Provide refreshment, exercise and encounters - for young and old.

The power of shading: creating cool oases

Climate change required new approaches to the design of urban spaces. Another focus of the urban oasis was the topic of shading. Suppliers presented solutions that enhanced outdoor areas with shading elements and noticeably improved the microclimate. Especially in combination with water, unique synergies were created that not only made cities more functional, but also more attractive.

Visitors experienced how playful and functional components together characterised a sustainable future.

Together for Water-Conscious Urban Development

Dr. Friedrich Hetzel

“Livable cities can only emerge if we plan, design, and maintain our settlements with water awareness in mind. This includes making water tangible, bringing greenery into cities, and using trees as natural air conditioners. Climate change with its increasing weather extremes forces us to act. Floods and droughts can cause significant damage, but retaining water within the city can help reduce risks while also ensuring the supply of urban greenery during dry phases. Inner-city areas, streets, or playgrounds must function as retention spaces. Without trees and parks, there is a lack of shade and evaporative cooling, causing cities to heat up drastically. The Alliance ‚Gemeinsam für eine wasserbewusste Stadtentwicklung‘ (Together for Water-Conscious Urban Development) is committed to ensuring that all citizens have rapid access to nearby, green open spaces.”
