Outdoor activity areas: Integrated planning and shared use
Moderator: María de Lourdes Sandoval Martinón, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in Mexico City, Mexico
This presentation highlights innovative approaches to designing public and educational spaces that promote exercise, integration, and social interaction. The sports and learning campus in Bürstadt shows how a multifunctional, sustainable campus can respond to demographic change, integration, and shifting social values by creating a center for sports, education, and community across generations. Complementing this, the focus on schoolyards as active spaces underscores the importance of accessible, inviting environments outside of school hours. Open, multifunctional designs without fences, combined with friendly signage, can encourage children and young people to engage in joyful, diverse activities, counteracting the decline in physical activity while creating vibrant, inclusive meeting places.
