FSB 2023: excellent outlook for the industry’s leading trade fair
All major market players due to participate
FSB, the International Trade Fair for Public Space, Sports and Leisure Facilities, is all set to kick off in Cologne in six weeks’ time. The world’s biggest event for the industry attracts almost all major players in the market. The leading trade fair is a must for anyone wanting to achieve success in the playground, sports, public space, leisure and exercise sectors. Only here do all industry partners get a comprehensive overview of what’s new: the latest technologies, product innovations, sustainability, process optimisations and visionary planning. FSB 2023 will take place from 24 to 27 October in co-location with aquanale, the International Trade Fair for Sauna.Pool.Ambience. The event’s conceptual sponsor is IAKS, the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities.More than 540 companies from 42 countries will be exhibiting at FSB 2023, which will extend over approximately 58,000 sqm in Halls 9.1, 10.1 and 10.2 of the Cologne trade fair grounds this year. More than 70 per cent of the exhibitors are based abroad. The largest contingents from outside Germany come from the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Turkey, the USA, Spain, China and Belgium. The exhibiting companies cover everything relating to public spaces, playground equipment, outdoor fitness, ice sports, sports equipment, sports flooring and stadium infrastructure.
A trade fair is the ideal communication platform to give all market players a comprehensive overview of new technologies, smart concepts and product innovations. It also facilitates in-depth discussions that foster important business relationships and generate new leads. This is reflected in the strong presence of market-leading companies, which take vital inspiration from FSB. For example, Berliner Seilfabrik, Bodet, CONICA AG, Espas, Eurotramp, W.M, HARO Hamberger Flooring GmbH & Co. A multitude of associations and cooperation partners
With the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB), the North Rhine-Westphalia Ice Hockey Association (EHV NRW), the Federal Association of Playground Equipment and Leisure Facilities Manufacturers (BSFH), the Federation of German Landscape Architects for North Rhine-Westphalia (BDLA NRW), Rolf von der Horst (formerly of STADTundRAUM) and SPORTNETZWERK.FSB on board alongside IAKS as its conceptual sponsor, FSB once again enjoys the backing of a great many associations and cooperation partners, all of whom have plenty to offer both in terms of sports and additional content in numerous activity areas.
Diverse event programme
The renowned IAKS Congress and further congresses and specialised events underline the significance of FSB as the leading international trade fair for the industry. This year, the IAKS Congress celebrates an anniversary with its 28th edition. More than 500 participants from 40 countries are expected at the international industry gathering. The IAKS Congress 2023 has adopted “Building resilient communities through sports and leisure facilities” as its motto. The congress sessions will focus on global challenges and the impact of megatrends on the sports industry. Topics will include community-oriented design, the inclusivity and enhancement of public spaces, reducing the carbon footprint of sports and leisure facilities, product passports focused on sustainability and developments relating to artificial turf.
Together with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), IAKS will also present the industry’s coveted international architecture prizes for 2023 at a ceremony on Tuesday, 24 October, 2023. The awards recognise buildings and facilities that succeed in combining sustainability and legacy considerations with clear functionality and exceptional architecture. In addition, the IOC IPC IAKS Architecture and Design Award for Students and Young Professionals will be presented to young architects who are using their creativity to design spaces and facilities that support an active lifestyle.
The 2nd German Sports Facilities Day will also be held as part of FSB 2023. The event, which is being organised jointly by IAKS, the German Olympic Sports Federation, the Association of German Cities (DST), the German Association of Towns and Municipalities (DStGB) and the Federal Institute of Sports Science (BISp), will focus on the topic of “the future of sports and exercise facilities in Germany”. The German Ice Hockey Federation is teaming up with the North Rhine-Westphalia Ice Hockey Association and IAKS to organise an information and discussion event, situated in Congress Centre East. From 10.30 a.m. on Tuesday, 24 October, 2023, the topic of “sustainable sports facility infrastructure in ice sports” will take centre stage. And the International Basketball Federation will also be represented in Hall 10.1, where it will host a networking and information stand.
plannerFORUM: exciting insights into real-world practice
At FSB 2023, the STADTundRAUM zone will once again be hosted in the PUBLIC SPACES area in Hall 9. In collaboration with its partners, the trade journal will present an attractive space and themed concept featuring workshops, special events, informative tours and networking opportunities. Taking pride of place in the centre of the zone will be the well-established plannerFORUM, jointly organised by Rolf von der Horst, the German Association of Playground Equipment and Leisure Facility Manufacturers (BSFH), media partner Playground@Landscape and the North Rhine-Westphalia branch of the Federation of German Landscape Architects (BDLA NRW). Planners will report on their current work and share tips and inspiration for the design of public spaces. As per tradition, BDLA NRW will stage the BDLA Day as part of the plannerFORUM. On Thursday, 26 October, 2023, the association will present exciting talks covering topics such as mobile skateboarding elements, green roofs and the sustainability of sports facilities.
For the fourth time, FSB will host SPORTNETZWERK.FSB, an initiative by Koelnmesse and the online cost calculator for sports facilities, Sportstättenrechner. Located in Hall 10.2, this networking area, designed as an indoor arena, is where decision makers from clubs, stadiums, local authorities and the world of politics can meet leading companies from the sports facilities industry. Strong cooperation partners, including the German Olympic Sports Confederation, the Working Group of German Sports Offices (ADS), the German sports club confederation Freiburger Kreis and the regional sports development agency Sportland.NRW, support the project at FSB and provide a contextual framework.
Special event areas to showcase trend sports
This year, FSB will once again present groundbreaking trends and innovative facilities. For example, the emerging sports of parkour and padel will be represented in dedicated special event areas. Here, visitors will not only be able to familiarise themselves with the latest products and technologies – they will also be able to try them out first-hand. In the parkour activity area, ParkourONE, the oldest and largest parkour school in the German-speaking region, will offer daily live performances and workshops. Furthermore, a padel court will be set up in SPORTNETZWERK.FSB’s indoor arena, where professionals will show off their skills and introduce visitors to this enthralling sport.

Gut gerüstet zeigt sich die FSB, Internationale Fachmesse für Freiraum, Sport- und Bewegungseinrichtungen, die in sechs Wochen in Köln an den Start geht. Das weltweit größte Branchenevent verzeichnet eine fast vollständige Präsenz marktführender Unternehmen. Die Leitmesse ist ein Muss für alle, die in den Bereichen Spiel, Sport, Freiraum und Bewegung erfolgreich sein wollen. Nur hier erhalten alle Marktpartner einen umfassenden Überblick über aktuelle Neuheiten: Technologien, Produktinnovationen, Nachhaltigkeit, Verfahrensoptimierungen und visionäre Planungen. Vielfältiges Eventprogramm geboten
Der renommierte IAKS-Kongress sowie weitere Kongresse und Fachveranstaltungen unterstreichen das hohe Niveau der FSB als internationale Branchenleitmesse. Mit seiner 28. Ausgabe feiert der IAKS-Kongress in diesem Jahr ein Jubiläum. Mehr als 500 Teilnehmende aus 40 Ländern werden zu dem internationalen Branchentreff erwartet. Das Programm des IAKS-Kongresses 2023 steht unter dem Motto „Sport- und Freizeitbauten als Fundament einer resilienten Gesellschaft“. Im Mittelpunkt der Kongress-Sessions stehen globale Herausforderungen und Auswirkung von Megatrends auf die Sportbranche: gemeinschaftsorientiertes Design, Inklusion und Aufwertung des öffentlichen Raums, die Verringerung des CO₂-Fußabdrucks bei Sport- und Freizeitbauten, der Produktpass Nachhaltigkeit oder Entwicklungen im Bereich Kunstrasen.
Gemeinsam mit dem Internationalen Olympischen Komitee (IOC) und dem Internationalen Paralympischen Komitee (IPC) verleiht die IAKS darüber hinaus am Dienstag, 24. Oktober 2023, in einem Festakt die begehrten internationalen Architekturpreise 2023. Die Awards prämieren Bauten und Anlagen, denen es gelingt, die Faktoren Nachhaltigkeit und Vermächtnis, eine klare Funktionalität und eine außergewöhnliche Architektur in Einklang zu bringen. Zudem wird auch der „IOC IPC IAKS Architecture and Design Award for Students and Young Professionals“ an junge Architektinnen und Architekten verliehen, die mit Ideenreichtum Räume und Flächen für einen aktiven Lebensstil gestalten.
Im Zuge der FSB 2023 findet ferner der 2. Deutsche Sportstättentag statt. Die gemeinsam von der IAKS, dem DOSB, dem Deutschen Städtetag (DST), dem Deutschen Städte- und Gemeindebund (DStGB) und dem Bundesinstitut für Sportwissenschaft (BISp) ausgerichtete Veranstaltung widmet sich dem Thema „Zukunft der Sport- und Bewegungsräume in Deutschland“. Der DEB veranstaltet in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Eishockey Verband NRW (EHV NRW) und der IAKS eine Informations- und Diskussionsveranstaltung im Congress-Centrum Ost. Am Dienstag, 24. Oktober 2023, geht es ab 10:30 Uhr um das Thema „Nachhaltige Sportstätten-Infrastruktur im Eissport“. Darüber hinaus ist auch die FIBA in Halle 10.1 mit einem Networking- und Informationsstand vertreten.
planerFORUM: Spannende Einblicke in die Praxis
Zur FSB 2023 wird im Bereich FREIRAUM erneut das Areal „STADTundRAUM“ inszeniert. Gemeinsam mit den Partnern entsteht in Halle 9 ein attraktives Areal und Themenkonzept mit Workshops, Sonderschauen, informativen Rundgängen und Networking-Möglichkeiten. Im Zentrum steht dabei das etablierte planerFORUM, das gemeinschaftlich von Rolf von der Horst, dem BSFH, dem Medienpartner Playground@Landscape und dem BDLA NRW organisiert wird. Planerinnen und Planer berichten aus der Praxis und geben Tipps und Anregungen für die Gestaltung öffentlicher Räume. Traditionsgemäß führt der BDLA NRW im Rahmen des planerFORUMS zudem wieder den BDLA-Tag durch. Am Donnerstag, 26. Oktober 2023, bietet der Verband spannende Vorträge zu Themen wie mobile Skateelemente, Dachbegrünung oder Nachhaltigkeit von Sportanlagen.
Bereits zum vierten Mal präsentiert die FSB das SPORTNETZWERK.FSB in Halle 10.2, eine Initiative von der Koelnmesse und Sportstättenrechner. In der Networking-Area, die als Indoor-Arena gestaltet wird, treffen Entscheiderinnen und Entscheider aus Vereinen, Kommunen, Politik und Stadien auf die führenden Unternehmen der Sportstättenindustrie. Starke Kooperationspartner wie der DOSB, die Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutscher Sportämter (ADS), der Freiburger Kreis oder das Sportland.NRW unterstützen das Messeprojekt und geben zudem einen inhaltlichen Rahmen.
Sonderflächen zeigen Trendsportarten
Auch in diesem Jahr präsentiert die FSB wieder wegweisende Trends und innovative Anlagen. So sind etwa die beiden Trendsportarten Parkour und Padel mit eigenen Sonderflächen vertreten. Besucherinnen und Besucher können hier nicht nur die neuesten Produkte und Technologien kennenlernen, sondern diese auch gleich selbst ausprobieren. Auf der Aktionsfläche „Parkour“ bietet ParkourONE, die älteste und größte Parkourschule im deutschsprachigen Raum, tägliche Live-Performances und Workshops an. Zudem wird in der Indoor-Arena von SPORTNETZWERK.FSB ein Padel-Court aufgebaut, auf dem Profis ihr Können zeigen und Besucherinnen und Besuchern die Faszination Padel näherbringen.
